Event Description:
Flag Day Ceremony at Campbell Park - hosted by the Huron Elks
The public is invited to the observance that will feature patriotic presentations and conduct a flag history ceremony.
The Flag Day observance commemorates the adoption of The Stars and Stripes that took place on June 14, 1777. The idea of celebrating the birthday of our flag is believed to have first originated in Wisconsin in 1885. In 1907, the Grand Lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks designated by resolution June 14 as Flag Day. The Grand Lodge adopted mandatory observance of the occasion by every Elks Lodge in 1911, and that requirement continues.
Other communities adopted the idea, and after decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day – the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 was officially established by a proclamation of President Wilson on May 30, 1916. On August 3, 1949, President Truman, himself an Elk, signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.
The public is invited. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the various ways in which we honor our flag.
